Slowing down is such a big part of supporting early communication development, I often encourage parents to try it out. Heck, it’s our main focus for the first week of Toddler Talk (swipe right to see the plan).

Today, surf coach Eddie had to tell me the same thing.🏄‍♀️ Slow down, give yourself time, let things settle.

I guess we all need this reminder every now and then.

But, creating that habit early on can establish some really positive communication between you and your child for years to come. When you look around, it can feel like you’re the only one with this struggle. But you’re not. Lots of parents are learning how to help their kids communicate.

Find people who get it. Find people who realise what a big deal it is that your kid waved to the bus driver, or said ‘let’s go!’ Find people who will happily listen to those tiny details of what they can do now.

There are plenty of things I take very seriously. How we show care for each other, how we speak up against injustice, the impact of our words.

And there’s plenty I don’t take so seriously. I’m less interested in teaching kids the rules than I am in helping them understand themselves and ask for what they need.
After all, we contain multitudes.

Paddling, not drowning, but still way out of my depth. I didn’t exactly mean to compete in the inaugural @wightwahines festival, but this community of women is so welcoming I got caught up in the stoke.

Being a newbie at anything is hard. I’m just glad to be out here. We ask our kids to do hard and ambitious things all the time, it’s easy to lose sight of the discomfort of that as adults. As one of the competitors said to me: This surfing thing is humbling.

Big hugs to all the families sending kids off to school for the first time today. I hope they find belonging and space to be themselves, even if they sometimes feel a little out of their depth.
